Billiard tables are very popular and are used for a variety of cue sports. The top of the table is made with a certain thickness of quarried slate and placed on top is a cloth material. The cushions that line the edges of the table are made from vulcanized rubber and are sometimes called rails. The size of the table varies depending on the game it is being made for.
The rubber cushions are placed to the inside of the wood rail on the table. Other than cushions or rails, the novice will sometimes call them bumpers. This is so because the purpose of these are to allow the balls to bounce off losing very little of its momentum. Sometimes the cushion shape will differ depending on the type of table.
The cloth that covers the slate tabletop and rails are usually made from a wool or nylon type substance. Few people call it felt because of its feel. Most of the time the color of the cloth is green to replicate a grass lawn. The origin of this game started on the lawn.
Cue sports include three popular categories. These include carom billiards that are popular overseas, snooker being popular in England, and pool which is the most popular in the United States.
Carom billiard tables are unique because they are pocketless. These tables are used for such games as artistic and three cushion billiards. The slate table has to be heated a few degrees above room temperature so that moisture will not hinder the balls. The heating of tables has been practiced since the Queen Victoria era.
A snooker table is the largest of the tables. It has six pockets and the cloth is made of worsted wool. The raised part or nap of the cloth can have a big affect on how the balls roll. This is especially true for the more finesse shots. The snooker table has the nap running from the baulk to the top of the table. In most cases it is always brushed and ironed in this direction.
The markings on a snooker table are quite different from most of the cue sport games. There is a line drawn from the bottom cushion twenty nine inches away. From this line a semicircle is drawn and this area is known as the baulk. The baulk is where the placement of the cue ball is when a break is needed or for when a ball has landed off the table.
The third area of the cue sports is pool. This is the most popular of the sports in the United States. A table for this game is the standard rectangle with the six pocket format. The lining of the pockets mostly consist of leather or plastic and drop into a pouch to hold the balls that have been pocketed. Most tables have the pouches to hold the balls, although some tables have a ball return that places the balls in a central location.
There are also other types of billiard and novelty tables used for specific games. These usually come in other shapes that include zig-zag, circular, and hexagonal.
